On my favorite black and white movie.

Here’s the thing: you may not even know this movie. If you’re from Mexico, you probably (and I may even say, you’d better) know it. If you’re not, well… here’s something you should watch.

49. Favourite black & white movie.

Ustedes, los ricos.

Ustedes, los ricos (You, the rich) is one of two sequels to Nosotros, los pobres (We, the poor). The stars of this classic movie are Pedro Infante, Blanca Estela Pavón, Evita Muñoz “Chachita”, and many others. It was released in 1948, and it tells the story of Pepe “El Toro”, a carpenter who is married to Celia,”La Chorreada”. They have a little boy, who they call “El Torito”. He has a niece he has raised as his own daughter, and who finds her filthy rich, biological father. They are poor and happy, but of course there has to be trouble, right? Chachita’s grandmother wants to basically buy her grandchild and her love, and Pepe has old enemies who would do anything to see him suffer.

Of course I recommend you see Nosotros, los pobres first. That way you’ll understand everything that happens in the sequel. I love the feel of the movie; old, realistic without being painfully truthful. Very good things happen, as well as horrible ones. But what I love the most is Pedro Infante’s and Blanca Estela Pavón’s performances. There is a scene in the movie (which I won’t spoil, in case you do watch it) where they literally break your heart. Good luck not crying then.

If you want to have a taste at the golden era of Mexican Films, give Ustedes, los ricos a try. And in case you’re curious, the last sequel is Pepe, El Toro.

What about you? Do you have a favorite black and white film?

See you soon!
